Edson Fernandez
Born in the city São Paulo, Brazil, Edson Fernandes soon after moved up north to Uberaba, the state of Minas Gerais, where he continues to live today. Fascinated by literature, as a child Fernandes would spend much of his time reading, eventually teaching himself French, English and Spanish, along with Portuguese, his mother tongue. Language is an important tool of expression for Fernandes. In many of his works, Fernandes has hidden messages through mixing words or phrases from either Portuguese, Spanish, French or English.
Dedicating many of his years to classical dance, Fernandes moved onwards to contemporary dance and painting. Fernandes extensive background of classical and contemporary dance is reflected in his creative process, where much importance is put on music and movement. Fernandes playfulness and use of color in his work expresses his free spirit and soul. His work teaches us as adults, the necessity of play, at every age. Creation, music and movement are interlinked for Edson, not one exist without the other.
Aside from his most recent solo show, "The Immensity of the Little Things" (Studio Rūsc, Chamonix, 2022), Fernandes has most recently participated in group shows at the Cultural Center of Uberaba (2022) and GaleriaLab (Uberaba, 2021). Today aside from creating his own works, Fernandes teaches drawing and painting at G.A.S. (Grupo Arte Somada, Uberaba), as well as dance atNUCA (Núcleo Contemporâneo das
Artes, Brasil).
